In The Night | Cyrus & Kero

kero-gold:

“Nike doesn’t like anything really. Don’t worry about her though; she’s hardly in charge. I’m the one that you should be afraid of.”

His warm smile and his words were contradicting each other immensely, and Kero couldn’t help but feel a tad bit confused by what he was saying. His smile told her she hadn’t really done the wrong thing, but his words were telling her to be afraid. There was little in this world she was afraid of, and she was not about to start being afraid now, even if he was at a higher ranking than her. She was a nobody compared to him after all. “So, afraid of you? Does that mean I should run in the opposite direction, screaming?” she said, her voice filled with amusement and glee. Kero was hoping he could be a little fun, that he wouldn’t be offended by her laid-back attitude and stature. Being all strict and high and mighty all day was tiring to her, and she couldn’t bring herself to be that kind of Peacekeeper, to think herself better than everyone else, when she was just another girl in the Capitol. Nothing special, nothing unique. Well, she was unique in the sense that she had not gotten any surgeries done. And she wouldn’t either.

“Well it’s nice to meet you Kero, and I’m sure once you get into the swing of things, Nike will loosen up.”

Kero somehow doubted that Nike would loosen up around her, as, according to her, Kero had made the biggest mistake of all, when all she had done was ask for guidance. It made little to no sense why she had freaked out like she had. “So, it’s normal for her to threaten to blow people’s brains out? Because I did not think that was protocol towards your employees,” she said, her eyebrows raised in question. It was an odd way to treat those you were supposed to be supervising, that was for sure, and the thought of getting her brains blown out wasn’t one she was particularly fond of. It scared her more than anything, because Kero, she wasn’t ready to die just yet. And certainly not for making a small mistake like that.

“Whenever you want. Like I said, Nike isn’t really the one in charge. Just switch shifts with someone you can win a fight with and the day shift is all yours.”

So, she had to fight someone to get the day shifts? Kero might be a girl, but she was fit, and strong. She had proven that when she beat up that drunken bastard, the person who was responsible for her being in this uniform right now. It still pissed her off. “Oh, I think I could take out a few people. I’m tiny, but I’m strong,” she said, putting up her arm to show off her muscles, which were apparent even under her uniform. She was strong, athletic, which basically made her the perfect Peacekeeper. Only she didn’t really want to be here at all.

“Though you might have a harder time, being new and all. Or easier, depending on how scary you can make yourself look.”

Kero laughed, shaking her head. How would she ever be able to make herself look scary was beyond her. Her features were too feminine and pretty to look scary, but at least she could try. “I don’t know how well I’d make myself look scary though. I’m not exactly a frightening person. I’m more of a lover,” she said, grinning wide as she looked up at the man. He could easily look scary, if he wanted to, whereas Kero was too pretty to ever really look scary. Her face couldn’t scare off anyone, even if she tried. “I think I’ll go for the fight instead. Seems like my odds are a little better like that,” she grinned.

“So, afraid of you? Does that mean I should run in the opposite direction, screaming?”

Cyrus laughed, the sound filling up the hallway. Believe it or not, a group of small children had once done that. He had always assumed it was because of his height, which was funny to him considering he was at least an entire foot taller than Kero. She ought to have been scared, though his sister had always told him his eyes were too kind for him to be scary. “Only if you anger me and it’s a lot harder to anger me than Nike.” Cyrus was sure just one unsettling look and Nike would be off in a rage. It was lucky for him the commanding officer liked him, as if it was possible not to like him. Even someone like Nike, a cold-hearted bitch, couldn’t ignore his charm.

“That’s all she said?” He asked, chuckling softly. Nike had said so much worse, to both him and other Peacekeeper. He had this theory that every night before she went to bed she would read a book, something along the name of How to Threaten People 101. He’d never once seen her act out on her promises of murder. “She once told me she’d kill my mother, I don’t even remember what I did.” He never did anything wrong so he couldn’t fathom how he could have upset Nike. One day she would get that stick out of her ass. “Nike’s boss is even worse, if that makes you feel any better.” He wasn’t referring to Orion, but Snow. Cyrus hadn’t spent much time with Nike before the 76th Hunger Games, but he had a feeling she was less of a bitch when she was back in District 2.

“Oh, I think I could take out a few people. I’m tiny, but I’m strong,”

“Well most of the time you just ask someone and if they say no, punch them till they say yes.” He said nonchalantly. He’d never had to resort to violence when switching shifts, but like he had said earlier, he was rather scary and the only person who rarely ever got on Nike’s bad side. Best not annoy him when he could control better than anyone who long you and your family were going to live. “Strong? I find that hard to believe.” She was toned sure but he wondered how she would fare in a fight against Rhy, who even he wouldn’t dare fight. Fighting with Nike was a nonissue to him but the blonde Peacekeeper always seemed to put up quite the fight.

“I don’t know how well I’d make myself look scary though. I’m not exactly a frightening person. I’m more of a lover,” […] “I think I’ll go for the fight instead. Seems like my odds are a little better like that,”

Running a hand through his hair he smiled, “Well you are a woman. Woman do tend to scare men rather easily.” His homosexuality saved him there. Or his half homosexuality. Or whatever the fuck he was. He had no attraction to Kero at all. “You’re more of a lover, yet you’re a Peacekeeper? Seems like you fucked something up along the way.” He wasn’t a lover, he was a fighter, and there was no question about it. He’d never met a Peacekeeper who didn’t consider themselves a fighter, even the medics did. Odd.
